Deriving strategic region-wise hydro-wind-solar portfolios

Abstract

Dramatic increases in variable renewable energy require enhancing power system flexibility to ensure reliable electricity supply. Flexible hydropower can undertake the renewable and natural storage role with adequate strategic operations considering cross-timescale detailed water-energy dynamic coupling characteristics and water demands. Here this study develops an hourly-to-multiyear framework to investigate hydro-wind–solar complementarities across different complementary modes, applying it to China Southern Power Grid. Results indicate that potential synergies and portfolios across complementary modes are distinct in China Southern Power Grid. Furthermore, regional resources interconnections could enhance the spatiotemporal hydro-wind–solar synergies and mitigate the hydrological-related impacts on the complementary potential. By effectively harnessing the spatiotemporal complementarity of renewable energy sources, hydropower is expected to leverage its reservoir regulation capability and cascading joint management capability to integrate wind and solar resources at 1.5 times its own capacity. Our work contributes to a better understanding of the future planning grid expansion and operation of China Southern Power Grid.
