Hydrogen energy integration for renewable power transition in South Asia: A strategic assessment towards sustainable development

Abstract

To achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), this study examines the transformative role that hydrogen energy can play in accelerating the transition to renewable electricity across South Asia. Despite the enormous potential of hydrogen technologies to decarbonize hard-to-abate industries, improve energy security, and enhance grid flexibility, their implementation remains limited, although solar, wind, and hydropower have experienced significant growth between 2010 and 2024. We evaluate the region's adoption of renewable energy and preparedness for hydrogen using five integrated analytical models: the Renewable Energy Development Index, the SDG Impact Assessment Model, the Energy Efficiency Analysis Model (EEAM), the Green Growth Index, and the Environmental Sustainability Score. The results reveal notable differences in funding, infrastructure, and policy alignment that hinder the widespread adoption of hydrogen. However, strategic investments in hydrogen generation, storage technology, and regional energy collaboration can unlock synergies with current renewable systems. This study offers fresh perspectives on planning technologies, creating policies, and establishing regional cooperation structures to support South Asia's hydrogen-enabled, low-carbon energy systems. It emphasizes incorporating hydrogen into national energy strategies to promote long-term resilience, economic diversification, and climate obligations.
