Assessment of solar energy resource potential in the western region of Jilin Province: A multi-dimensional framework based on availability, stability and concentration

Abstract

With China's transition towards a sustainable energy structure and the growing demand for carbon emission reductions, solar energy plays a vital role in the development of the renewable energy sector. Therefore, a comprehensive assessment of solar energy resource potential is necessary to encourage the growth of a thriving solar energy industry. This study focuses on the western region of Jilin Province in China. By applying the proposed “availability-stability-concentration” framework in combination with the coupling coordination model, the potential of solar energy resources is evaluated and their spatial-temporal patterns are explored for the period 1971–2020. Additionally, a geodetector model is employed to reveal the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors on solar energy resources. The results show that solar energy resources and photovoltaic power generation in the study area exhibit minor spatial and temporal disparities, yet pronounced seasonal variations and a slight decline over the past five decades. Overall, the resources remain abundant, stable, and uniformly distributed, with low regional concentration. Coordination among availability, stability and concentration is favorable, and the synergistic effects are intensifying. Sunshine duration exerts the strongest individual influence on surface solar radiation, while interactions among multiple factors, notably aerosols and precipitation, further enhance explanatory power. This study provides a scientific basis for policy decisions and contributes to advancing China's dual-carbon targets.
