The patent law, supply chain finance level, and corporate cross-regional mergers and acquisitions: A quasi-natural experiment of the fourth amendment to the patent law

Abstract

Based on panel data of Chinese listed companies from 2013 to 2023, this paper systematically examines the relationship among the Patent Law, the level of supply chain finance, and cross-regional mergers and acquisitions (M&A) by enterprises. The research findings indicate that the Patent Law promotes cross-regional M&A activities by enterprises; moreover, the Patent Law facilitates such M&A through the enhancement of supply chain finance levels. The implementation effects of the Patent Law exhibit heterogeneity across regions with different levels of economic development, providing empirical evidence for improving the intellectual property system and optimizing enterprise resource allocation.
