Abstract

While homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) technology holds significant promise for hybrid vehicles due to its high efficiency and low emissions, the need for preheating remains a major barrier. If a fuel is discovered to achieve efficient combustion with nearly room temperature in HCCI engines, it could address preheating issues in hybrid vehicles, paving the way for commercialization. This research investigated the effects of intake temperature (Tin) for three coal-based naphtha/alcohols blends (N65M25B10; N60M30B10; N55M35B10) in HCCI engines. Different equivalence ratios were employed for the three blends, with the objective of investigating a wider range of Tin. As is demonstrated, N65M25B10 is observed to operate stably in HCCI mode close to room temperature (313 K) with the HC and CO emissions are only 405 ppm and 0.16 %. The sensitivity to Tin is significantly reduced once Tin exceeds 323 K. N60M30B10 operated effectively across a broader range of Tin from 313 K to 373 K. As Tin increases, there is a notable enhancement in the values of Pmax, PRRmax and HRRmax, which reach 2.59 MPa, 1.01 MPa/°CA and 135.5 % respectively. The high proportion of methanol in N55M35B10 results in the delay of the combustion phase in comparison to other fuels, leaving stricter requirement of Tin.
