Abstract

Knowledge fosters innovation, but it is important to recognize that the system is not linear, in the classic R & D & I initials, starting from research and continuing with development to reach innovation. Knowledge comes from different sources and one of them is the empirical knowledge of people who are close to the reality of everyday problems and the implementation of technological developments. Therefore, the transmission of knowledge is not unidirectional but bidirectional, from the experts (researchers and technicians) and from the agri-food farmers and entrepreneurs. Both groups need to exchange their knowledge, which often have different perspectives. This approach is treated in a new technological platform that uses digital media for communication and is called RICA (Network for the Exchange of Agri-Food Knowledge, at http://ricagroalimentacion.es). In this work its generation, the sections that compose it, the difficulties of its management, the results and some reflections for the future are explained. After 4 years of RICA development it is enough time to evaluate all these aspects. This paper also explains the importance of incorporating in RICA sections related to information and others related to knowledge. The former promotes greater visibility, which generates greater contact with the sections related to knowledge. Experience indicates that experts have been able to respond to expectations of disclosure, to a much greater extent than farmers and agri-food entrepreneurs to express their problems and knowledge. The former reacts positively to disclose their knowledge, when they find that what is published on the platform has high visibility. However, the latter are more reluctant to use the digital platform, accustomed to more personal contact by establishing stable and credible relationships. The difficulty that experts have in reaching their knowledge to end users should be solved by technicians who are particularly sensitive to innovation. The use of the Internet for the acquisition of knowledge is still restricted by certain groups and, with greater use, will take a long time to complete and will be led by the younger generations.
