Economic analysis of the determinants of citrus fruit exports from South Africa after the period of trade liberalization

Abstract

The aim of the study was to analyze the determinants of citrus fruit exports from the Republic of South Africa (RSA) after the period of trade liberalization using secondary data from the years 1996–2018. To examine the relationship between citrus fruit exports and their determinants in the long term, the Johansen cointegration model and the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method were used. The results of the Johansen cointegration model confirmed the existence of a long-term equilibrium between citrus fruit exports from South Africa and its selected determinants. In turn, the OLS analysis documented that the main factors influencing citrus fruit exports were the volume of production and the level of prices on world markets. Initiatives to ensure production growth and support the development of citrus fruit producers' activities should be undertaken by the ministry responsible for agriculture and by industry associations.
