Abstract

Charles L. Griswold Jr. (1999, 26) legt seiner bemerkenswerten Studie über den Beitrag von Adam Smith zur Aufklärung das nach seinen Worten auf Platon zurückgehende Interpretationsprinzip der "charity" zu Grunde, das bei aller Zeitbedingtheit und aller gedanklichen Weiterentwicklung im Laufe des Lebens letztlich von einem organischen Zusammenhang der verschiedenen Texte eines Autors - in seinem Falle also von A. Smith - ausgeht. Ein solches Prinzip der hermeneutisch unterstellten "Sinneinheit" bei aller Kontextualität der einzelnen Schriften scheint mir auch für die Lektüre und Interpretation der Bibel sinnvoll, denn es hilft, zwei gleichermaßen unfruchtbare Extrempositionen zu vermeiden: Zum einen verfällt man so nicht der Verlockung des unmittelbaren "biblizistischen" Zugriffs auf einzelne Textstellen, die dann ohne Rücksicht auf den zeitlichen und inhaltlichen Kontext und die Architektur unterschiedlicher Gesichtspunkte, die jeweils zur Geltung kommen, als unmittelbare Rezepte für die Ausgestaltung individuellen Lebens und kollektiven Zusammenlebens herauspräpariert und unmittelbar angewendet werden (sollen). Zugleich erliegt man auch nicht der umgekehrten Gefahr, die verschiedenen biblischen Texte einfach als beliebige historische Dokumente aufzufassen, denen über den jeweiligen konkreten Anlass keinerlei generelle Bedeutung zukommt; gegen eine solche historisierende Auflösung in kontingentes Archivmaterial spricht schon die Tatsache, dass es sich ja bei der Bibel um einen Kanon bestimmter ausgewählter Texte handelt, die einen besonderen Status beanspruchen: Über den jeweils konkreten Anlass hinaus wird also etwas allgemein Gültiges gesagt, "wie es denn geschrieben steht", aber was das in der konkreten historischen Situation bedeuten kann, muss jeweils neu bestimmt
