Außenhandel und ausländische Direktinvestitionen deutscher Unternehmen

Abstract

Die vorliegende Studie zur Stellung forschungs- und wissensintensiver Wirtschaftszweige Deutschlands im internationalen Wettbewerb knüpft an Analysen an, die das Niedersächsische Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (NIW) in den vergangenen Jahren mehrfach im Rahmen der Berichterstattung zur technologischen Leistungsfähigkeit Deutschlands erstellt hat (zuletzt Gehrke et al. 2007). Sie aktualisiert einerseits die Berechnungen des NIW und stellt so die Kontinuität zu früheren Berichten her. In der Weiterentwicklung dieser Studien nimmt sie aber verstärkt ins Bild, dass sich im Zuge der Globalisierung die Einbindung von Unternehmen in die internationale Arbeitsteilung spürbar gewandelt hat. Der grenzüberschreitende Austausch von Waren und Dienstleistungen vollzieht sich nämlich in abnehmendem Maße durch den traditionellen Außenhandel, sondern verstärkt durch das grenzüberschreitende Engagement multinationaler Unternehmen. Hinzu kommt, dass Unternehmen im Zuge der Globalisierung ihrer Aktivitäten in zunehmendem Maße auch ihre Forschungs- und Entwicklungstätigkeit an wenigen Standorten konzentrieren.
