School Mapping Using Geo-Spatial Technology: Case Study Of Universities In Edo State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the application of geo-spatial technology in school mapping for university education in Edo State, focusing on the spatial distribution of universities across Local Government Areas and the extent to which population size and accessibility influence their location. Using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools and spatial coordinate data of universities and Local Government Areas, the study revealed a clear pattern of uneven distribution, with universities largely clustered in urban and semi-urban areas such as Benin City and Ekpoma, while several high and moderately populated Local Government Areas remain without any university presence. The findings further show that population size alone does not determine university siting, as factors such as urbanization, accessibility, and economic viability play a more dominant role in location decisions. The study concludes that geo-spatial technology provides an effective framework for identifying spatial inequalities in higher education provision and recommends its integration into educational planning to enhance equitable access, improve efficiency in university siting, and support evidence-based policy decisions.
