Abstract

Este estudio analiza el papel del Estado en la transformación económica de tres regiones de agricultura irrigada en el Valle del Rio SaÞo Francisco en el nordeste de Brasil. El objetivo es entender las razones por las cuales sólo una de esas tres regiones (Petrolina-Juazeiro) tuve éxito en diversificar su economía y se convirtió en una región agrícola moderna basada en productos no tradicionales de exportación de alta calidad, al tiempo que mejoraron los salarios y estándares laborales de los trabajadores asalariados rurales, sin comprometer el acceso de los productores a los mercados de exportación. Esto a pesar de que las tres regiones recibieron fuertes inversiones en infraestructura de irrigación de gran escala de parte del gobierno.
