Les "classes moyennes" des pays en développement à l’épreuve de la crise COVID-19 : la Chine et Madagascar mis en perspective

Abstract

Based on the position of the urbanmiddle classes in the labor market in China and Madagascar, we analyze how they have been impacted by the lockdown measures and the social policies adopted to face the COVID-19 crisis through the employment and social protection channels. The lower China's urban middle class (small entrepreneurs and skilled and unskilled private workers) will see their vulnerability increase. The malagasy urban moderate prosperity(unskilled private employees and small entrepreneurs and informal workers) will be in a precarious situation. While in China, social policies will have uncertain effects on these vulnerable middle classes, in Madagascar the small prosperities are completely left to their fate.
