Abstract

Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la France a fait figurer le relèvement et la modernisation de l'agriculture parmi les priorités nationales. Soucieuses de mettre fin aux pénuries alimentaires, de libérer la main-d'œuvre nécessaire à la reconstruction et au redressement de l'industrie, tout en garantissant aux exploitants un revenu acceptable, les autorités ont conçu une politique agricole très interventionniste. Les mesures de soutien des prix, instauré avant la guerre et repris ensuite, puis étendu dans le cadre de la PAC, ont eu pour effet d'intensifier encore une production faisant intervenir de grandes quantités de pesticides et d'engrais. Des données statistiques illustrent ces propos. L'approche environnementale est ensuite détaillée, ainsi que les problèmes liés à l'utilisation de l'eau en agriculture.
