Diferencias en la permanencia y el desempeño en la educación superior entre estudiantes provenientes de colegios públicas y privadas

Utilizando datos de estudiantes que ingresaron a la Universidad de Costa Rica en el 2008 exploramos las diferencias en la permanencia y el desempeño entre los estudiantes de colegios privados y públicos. No encontramos evidencia que muestre que los estudiantes de colegios públicos abandonen más la educación superior que los estudiantes de colegios privados. Para el primer año, en promedio, los estudiantes de colegios privados muestran mejores resultados que los de colegios públicos. Luego, para poder identificar si dos estudiantes con las mismas características tienen el mismo desempeño y permanencia en la Universidad de Costa Rica, utilizamos análisis de regresión. Luego de condicionar por la nota de admisión y otras características del estudiante, los estudiantes de colegios públicos muestran un mejor desempeño para una misma carrera durante el primer año. Esto refleja que el proceso de admisión es adverso a los estudiantes del colegio público ya que la nota de admisión debió haber reflejado el mejor desempeño potencial del estudiante del colegio público, pero no lo hace. Para el cuarto año, las diferencias entre estos dos grupos de estudiantes desaparecen completamente.
