Can There Be a Resource-Based View of Politics?

Abstract

This paper evaluates recent contributions that have used the resource-based view of the firm as far as politics is concerned. We show that the resource perspective has been mobilized in two very different contexts. One is the use of political resources in corporate political behavior, while the second context corresponds to the issue of the exploitation of favorable public decisions that some authors see as corporate resources. We conclude that mobilizing the resource concept is more relevant in the first case than in the second one. This paper also provides an opportunity to offer a general framework on the process going from corporate political activity to superior economic performance, granting a central role to the notion of public-policy advantage.
