The Impact of Project Teams on CMMI Implementations: a Case Study from an Organizational Culture Perspective

Abstract

This paper presents a case study that theorizes how project team culture in software engineering organizations affects Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) implementation from an organizational culture perspective. It contends that the success of CMMI implementation is positively related to project team culture along the six aspects of organizational culture: position on reform, centralization and coordination, position on collaboration, rationality and truth, motivation, and position on task. This paper uses a qualitative approach to conduct semi-structured interviews and performs a content analysis of the transcribed interview-related data from case protocol to analyze the gathered information. The results indicate the scope for the impact team culture has on CMMI implementation and suggests the potential for CMMI implementations to bring about changes in organizational culture, which can support the integration of software into an organization. In addition, this study develops a cultural construction that shows the aspects of culture that best facilitate a strong project team culture in CMMI implementation. It extends the theory regarding the impact of culture on CMMI implementation and provides a theoretically grounded basis for future research.
