Abstract

With the increase in distributed generations (DGs), traditional settled directional over current relays coordination is no longer efficient in providing satisfactory protection. As DGs are integrated in distribution networks, unidirectional flow of current changes to bidirectional, resulting in failure of coordination among the relays. Several adaptive protection techniques have been proposed to encounter the issue. Here an advanced optimization method namely Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) is implemented for optimizing the total relay operating time during the occurrence of faults. AOA technique is simple and reliable as there are only few parameters which requires adjustments. The efficacy of AOA is tested on the static case (i.e. IEEE 3-bus, IEEE 8-bus and IEEE 15-bus system). The recommended optimization method is better than existing approaches in respect of overall relay operating time as well as maintaining the coordination time interval.
