Abstract

[eng] The Mobility of People Living Alone in France and Great Britain . More and more people live alone. The 1 990 French census and the 1991 British census both report that over one-quarter of all housing is occupied by people living alone. Longer life expectancy and continuing greater male mortality rates have extended living alone to beyond 65 years. Yet, in ten years, the number of people living alone has risen primarily in large towns and cities where changes in lifestyles occur with the greatest intensity. Those who live alone are mainly individuals of working age under 40 years old, particularly women. . Migration is often an occasion to leave home and live alone. Leaving the parental home to live alone in London or Paris is tending to become an essential step on the way to securing an executive position, especially for women. Two longitudinal statistical sources, The Longitudinal Study in England and the Continuous Demographic Sample in France, are used to describe the main residential changes. The findings show remarkable similarities between the two countries in this regard.
