Abstract

[eng] Patent Bibliometrics: A Measurement of Technological Activity . the United States are filed by Americans. Yet the analysis above all highlights Japan's technological performance on these two markets, even though they are foreign markets for the country. . A count of the patents filed with European and American offices and the statistical analysis of their characteristics provide a measurement of research activity in nearly every sector. The breakdown by technological field is fairly similar in these two patent systems. . Competition exists almost exclusively between the United States, Japan and the European Union. A proximity effect is found in each of the two systems. Nevertheless, this advantage remains relative as only half of the patents in Europe come from Europeans and half of the patents in Europe, the Germans file twice as many patents with the European system as the French, who file twice as many as the English. In France, the high profile of the Paris area is tempered by the technological performance of the Rhône-Alpes region.
