Abstract

Extracting energy from ocean or wind currents using flow-induced vibrations (FIV) in cylindrical structures offers a significant method for producing clean, renewable energy. This study investigates the FIV of an elastically supported, transversely vibrating cylindrical piezo energy harvester (PEH) with upstream fixed prisms of varying counts (n = 1, 3, 4, 5, 6). The aim is to understand how changes in the separation point of the upstream column affect the downstream column's vibrations and PEH performance. Wind tunnel experiments reveal the coupled vibration behavior of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) and wake-induced galloping (WIG). Three vibrational behaviors were predicted using numerical models that accurately reproduced the experimental results. The analysis shows that at a spacing ratio of l = 1.3D (f2 = 6.152Hz), a non-multiple-order mode exists between the square column. At a spacing of l = 5.0D, the pronounced wake effect significantly suppresses WIG. Notably, the vibrational mode of SVIV + SWIG at l = 1.3D has top properties in terms of energy harvesting. The vibrational mode conversion mechanism is successfully explained by 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, which analyze vortex shedding migration at the microscopic level and 3D flow field maps at the macroscopic level.
