Abstract

This work evaluates the potential for green hydrogen production near the Port of Pecém, located in the metropolitan region of Fortaleza, capital of the state of Ceará, in northeastern Brazil. There, the average annual solar irradiation is 5.84 kWh/m2/day, and the average wind speed is 6.87 m/s. Therefore, it is possible to produce a lot of hydrogen at a low and competitive cost. In this context, this work simulates and evaluates an off-grid hydrogen plant powered by photovoltaic, wind and hybrid energy, concluding that it is possible to produce up to 5.18 GW/year/MW at a levelized cost of 23.40 US$/MWh, 88.8 tons/year/MW of hydrogen at costs of 2.0–4.0 US$/kg. This production cost corroborates those assessed by the International Energy Agency.
