Abstract

Integrating green hydrogen into natural gas pipelines offers carbon reduction potential, but its effects on compressor performance and stability remain unclear, posing operational challenges. To evaluate the impact of green hydrogen blending on the performance and stability of two-stage centrifugal compressors, a high-resolution 3D compressor model is developed using 3D scanning. Simulations conducted with the Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) turbulence model are validated against operational data, showing high accuracy and closer alignment with real-world performance than traditional similarity conversions. Analysis of different green hydrogen blending ratios under various operating conditions reveals that at constant impeller speed and inlet pressure, higher green hydrogen ratios reduce mixed gas density and specific heat, resulting in lower compression work, pressure, and temperature. Green hydrogen blending also expands the surge region, shifting the surge and maximum flow lines downward, which reduces the compressor's stable operating range. Specifically, increasing the hydrogen ratio from 0 % to 20 % decreases the operating area by 17.32 %. For stable transport of natural gas blended with green hydrogen, increasing inlet flow to maintain target outlet pressure and adjusting compressor speed to prevent surge is recommended. These findings provide valuable insights for the safe and efficient integration of green hydrogen in natural gas systems.
