Stochastic study of the wind-energy potential of India

Abstract

Stochastic analyses of hourly wind-energy data for each day of the year were performed at seven representaive weather stations in India. The goal was to develop a probability model for wind data and to assess the wind-energy potential at various locations. None of the standard probability models describes the wind-energy data adequately. However, the Box-Cox transformation may be used to transform the data for all of the stations to a normal distribution. Visakhapatnam has the greatest potential for wind-energy utilization. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov two-sample test was used to test the homogeneity of different weather stations with respect to effective wind-energy distribu tion patterns. The station pairs Visakhapatnam-Madras and Delhi-Calcutta are homogeneous. Although the results obtained are site-specific, the methodology has general applicability.
