Abstract
In an incredibly short period of time, artificial intelligence (AI) has gone from being simply a technology for the future to something that is now very much part of every day life for many language learners. This research explores how English Foreign learners integrate AI into the Listening and Speaking module and how they develop their oral communication skills during their first year at the Teacher Training College of Bouzareah in Algeria. The study seeks to determine which tools students have access to, which tools they prefer to use, and if there is a correlation between the students' views and how the teachers reflect those views. In order to achieve its objectives, a mixed methods research was employed. A close-ended questionnaire was completed by 104 students and a structured observation checklist was applied by the researcher. Although the students are currently using AI to support their learning, they view AI as a positive tool that supports both listening and speaking. However, the institutional side of things is vastly underdeveloped. Observations of the classrooms indicated that while AI is sometimes used in formal instructional settings, it is not used consistently due to problems with the technology and the lack of a comprehensive teaching approach. Based upon the findings of this study, recommendations for closing the identified gap include providing AI training for teachers, investing in digital infrastructure and revising the oral skills modules so that they are designed to incorporate AI enhanced methods.
