Informationen zum Studium verringern soziale Unterschiede bei der Studienabsicht von AbiturientInnen

Abstract

High school graduates whose parents have no academic background are less likely to go on to higher education than are those with at least one college- or university- educated parent. But the first results of the Berliner- Studienberechtigen- Panels (Best Up), a joint study conducted by DIW Berlin and the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), indicate that providing high schoolers with information on the benefits and financing of college education increases the likelihood that they intend to enroll in college—particularly for students whose parents have no academic background. It’s not just about intentions, though: provision of information also increases the likelihood that the students will carry out these plans, which means that they will actually apply to college. Offering such short school workshops can therefore be an effective measure in reducing the effect of social inequality on high school graduates’ intentions to study. AbiturientInnen, deren Eltern keinen Hochschulabschluss haben, studieren seltener als MitschülerInnen, bei denen mindestens ein Elternteil einen Universitäts- oder Fachhochschulabschluss hat. Erste Ergebnisse des Berliner-Studienberechtigten-Panels (Best Up) des DIW Berlin und des Wissenschaftszentrums Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) zeigen, dass bereitgestellte Informationen zum Nutzen und zur Finanzierung eines Studiums insbesondere bei Jugendlichen ohne akademischen Bildungshintergrund der Eltern dafür sorgen, dass sie eher ein Studium anstreben. Und nicht nur das: Die Informationen führen dazu, dass sie dieses Vorhaben auch tatsächlich umsetzen wollen und sich nach dem Abitur auf Studienplätze bewerben. Um die soziale Ungleichheit bei der Studienabsicht von AbiturientInnen zu verringern, können kurze Schulworkshops mit wissenschaftlichen Informationen zu Nutzen und Finanzierung eines Studiums eine effektive Maßnahme sein.
