Abstract

The notion of work intensity, although frequently used in current debates about intensification of job demands, lacks conceptual and operational precision. For the purpose of job analysis and work design it is necessary to know which working conditions have an influence on work intensity. A conceptual model is introduced that defines work intensity as a function of amount of tasks requirements, given time and cognitive requirements which are necessary to deal with tasks. Availability of time is conceived as being determined by time constraints, hindrances that cost additional time and availability of legal methods to deal with a lack of time. Problem-centered interviews were conducted with 18 workers in a variety of jobs and different branches of economy. Data was analysed by qualitative content analysis with emphasis on extracting environmental working conditions which cost the worker additional time. Nearly all extracted working conditions fitted into the preexisting conceptual model. In addition, “personal prerequisites” and “social influences” were identified as working conditions that also may cost additional time. However, social influences are a different kind of stressor than quantitative demands and personal prerequisites do overlap with fatigue as a result of dealing with high workload. Therefore both factors should not be added to the model. The compilation of working conditions reported in this study should be incorporated in future development of instruments for assessing work intensity and is also a starting point for human centered work design.
