Abstract

"This study makes a contribution to explaining the gender-specific wage differentials in western Germany. On the basis of the IAB employment survey and the IAB additional survey I, we estimate the wages of men and women using flexible wage equations which take into consideration the entire employment biography including the type and duration of each past employment interruption. Thus, we can differentiate between the short-term and the long-term wage effects of unemployment, formal parental leave as well as of other interruptions, and determine their contribution to explaining the gender-specific wage differential. Not only is the work experience of men and women remunerated differently on the labour market; the wages of men and women are also affected differently by past employment interruptions. The negative wage effects of statutory parental leave and of further work interruptions of women contribute considerably to the gender-specific wage differential."
