Alternative measure of border effects across regions: Ripley's K‐function method

Abstract

This study uses Ripley's K‐function to examine the diversity in cross‐region labor mobility under various border effects from heterogeneous policies. Based on manufacturing labour data for Chinese cities, we emphasize the importance of border effects in the formation of regional integration with a Ripley's K‐function analysis. The statistical measures indicate that the amount of labour mobility involves distance‐decay effects of the border. However, the variety in the distance‐decay of the border effects differs considerably between each pair of adjacent regions. For this reason, transport costs caused by natural or economic geography probably explained most of the differences in border effects. Este estudio utiliza la función K de Ripley para analizar la diversidad de la movilidad laboral entre regiones bajo diversos efectos fronterizos de políticas heterogéneas. A partir de datos sobre la mano de obra del sector manufacturero de las ciudades chinas, en este artículo se destaca la importancia de los efectos fronterizos en la formación de la integración regional por medio de un análisis de la función K de Ripley. Las medidas estadísticas indican que, cuantitativamente, la movilidad laboral implica efectos de decaimiento por distancia de la frontera. Sin embargo, la variedad en el decaimiento por distancia de los efectos fronterizos difiere considerablemente entre cada par de regiones adyacentes. Por esta razón, los costos de transporte causados por la geografía natural o económica probablemente lograron explicar la mayoría de las diferencias en los efectos fronterizos. 本稿では、RipleyのK関数法を用いて、異質の政策からの様々な境界効果の影響下にある地域間の労働移動の多様性を検討する。中国の都市の製造業の労働力データに基づき、RipleyのK関数による分析により、地域統合の形成における境界効果の重要性を強調する。統計的測定から労働移動の量は周辺地域の距離減衰効果が関係していることが指摘される。しかし、境界効果の距離減衰は隣接する2つの地域の組み合わせによってかなり異なっている。そのため、境界効果の差異のほとんどは、おそらくは自然地理あるいは経済地理によって発生する輸送費によって説明できる。
