Ehre und Vertrauen im Fernhandel der Deutschen Hanse: Ein Beitrag zur Debatte um das Ideal des "Ehrbaren Kaufmanns" aus Sicht der Ordonomik

Abstract

Eine in Deutschland prominent vertretene Position schlägt vor, die Tradition des „Ehrbaren Kaufmanns“ als zentrale historische Quelle heranzuziehen, um eine stärkere positive Fundierung von Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) zu ermöglichen. Vor diesem Hintergrund entwickelt dieser Beitrag eine wirtschaftsethische Rekonstruktion der norddeutschen Kaufmannsgeschichte, welche auf systematische Weise die Interdependenzen von Institutionen und Ideen berücksichtigt. Der Beitrag entwickelt folgende Thesen: (1) Das Ideal des ehrbaren Kaufmanns ist eine ideelle Innovation, die einen Beitrag dazu leistet, Governanceprobleme bei der Vertragsdurchsetzung im mittelalterlichen (Fern-)Handel zu adressieren. (2) Die Lösung von Problemen bei der Vertragsdurchsetzung erfordert eine institutionelle Innovation, d.h. ein enabling environment, welches die norddeutschen Kaufleute durch die Governance-Strukturen der Stadt, durch Städtebünde und schließlich durch die Deutsche Hanse aktiv etablieren. (3) Ein modernes Leitbild von Unternehmensethik und CSR kann auf die Tradition des ehrbaren Kaufmanns zurückgreifen, wenn sie der systematischen Reflexion von Interdependenzen zwischen Institutionen und Ideen eine grundlegende Rolle einräumt. Ein solchermaßen reflektierter Zugriff auf das Leitbild kann der Betriebswirtschaftslehre als wertvolle Heuristik dienen, Unternehmen zur Übernahme von Ordnungsverantwortung konstruktiv anzuleiten.
