Abstract

This paper aims to present the Price Equation and its application to the Brazilian economy, with theoretical grounding in neo-Schumpeterian approach to competition, innovation and dynamics, as well as the Generalized Darwinism perspective. A model inspired in Price Equation is used to decompose the variation in labor productivity of Brazilian manufacturing industry as well as in its sectors, considering the classes of the Classificação Nacional de Atividade Econômica (CNAE) for the period extending from 2007 to 2011. The decomposition of the change in labor productivity in this pioneering study in Brazil will shed light on the effects of selection and innovation in the short run in a disaggregated way.
