Abstract

Consumer society is still a global paradigm, but simultaneously poses significant environmental threats, making materialism a highly relevant and critical concept. However, this notion now evolves within the context of liquid consumption, characterized by digitalization, experiences, and the functional economy, calling for a fresh perspective. Based on a systematic review of 84 articles published between 2010 and 2024 sourced from Scopus, this study proposes an integrative conceptualization of liquid materialism. It examines its status, characteristics, and offers a definition designed to guide the development or adaptation of its measurement. Theoretically, this study stands out for its integrative approach, bringing together and connecting multiple dimensions of materialism within the liquid consumption context, which have so far been addressed in a fragmented manner in the literature. Theoretical and societal implications of the evolution in materialism are also discussed, in particular regarding marketing strategies and sustainability.
