Comparing the Compensation of Federal and Private-Sector Employees in 2022

Abstract

The difference between the compensation of federal civilian employees and that of similar private-sector employees varied widely in 2022 depending on employees’ educational attainment. For federal workers whose highest level of education was a master’s degree or more, the cost of total compensation was less, on average, than the cost for their counterparts in the private sector.
