Abstract

In the Philippines, farmers have often cited the lack of access to capital as the main impediment to increasing agricultural production. Production and marketing ex penditures of smallholder farmers are predominantly financed by traders and household savings. Product, input and credit markets are strongly interlinked and involve both formal and informal sectors. This research aims to understand the existing financial systems available to smallholder livestock farmers in Western Leyte, Philippines. It investigates the constraints and problems faced by livestock farmers in relation to access to capital, identifies opportunities to overcome credit constraints and formulates recommendations for improving access of smallholder farmers to credit.
