Abstract

Die spezifischen Bedingungen von Grenzräumen geben immer wieder Anlass dafür, dass die Raumwissenschaften sich ihnen mit einem besonderen Interesse zuwenden. Dabei geht es um die mannigfachen Auswirkungen von - in der Regel - peripheren Lagen: um sozio-kulturelle Aspekte ebenso wie um regionalwirtschaftliche Determinanten der Entwicklung. In jüngerer Zeit kommen im Zuge der Entwicklung innerhalb der alten EU wie auch der EU-Erweiterung erhebliche Änderungen hinzu im Hinblick auf das, was traditionell als peripher angesehen wird. Wenn sich durch Grenzöffnungen die Wahrnehmung von Räumen verändert und spürbare Änderungen in den sozioökonomischen Zusammenhängen stattfinden, sehen sich manche Räume mitunter fast im Zentrum von neuen räumlichen Bezügen. Insbesondere die Folgen von Grenzöffnungen auf Bevölkerung, Raum- und Siedlungsstruktur sind darum Gegenstand von Forschungsaktivitäten unterschiedlicher Institutionen. Durch die säkularen Umwälzungen in Mittel- und Osteuropa und den damit einhergehenden, zum Teil dramatischen Bedeutungswandel der Staatsgrenzen hat dieses Interesse noch einmal einen deutlichen Schub erhalten.
