Abstract

The 20th Human Development Report (HDR) issued in 2010 presents several new indices: the Inequality-adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI), the Gender Inequality Index (GII), and a new Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). The paper introduces these indices together with their mathematical-statistical basics; also comparing the new proposals with the elder ones of previous reports. The main methodological basis is a social evaluation function determining general means and appropriately incorporating inequality aversion by choosing a respective parameter.
