The present article has the goal to provide an overview on the most relevant research publications placed at the intersection between the study of the Industry 4.0 and the concepts of innovation and sustainability. A review of the literature has been carried out and the most cited 80 publications identified in Scopus have been analyzed. The investigation pointed out that there is an exponential growth of the research activity in this field in recent years and that Europe is ahead of China and the United States as regards the number of scientific publications. The fundamental contribution of this article consists in highlighting the most important aspects related to the Industry 4.0 and the concepts of innovation and sustainability, by systematizing the findings of the publications studied.
