Abstract

(The article is a critical review of the book by Lorenzo Esposito and Giuseppe Mastromatteo, La vigilanza bancaria. Storia, teorie, prospettive (Banking supervision. History, theories, and perspectives, 2021). The book deals with all the main issues that have shaped the evolution of supervision over the recent decades, beside the Basel discipline: the interactions between supervision and crises and the ways in which they are managed, at national and international level, particularly in the scope of the Banking Union; the relationship between money creation and banks and therefore the risks deriving from cryptocurrencies, artificial intelligence, and Big Tech; and the role of central banks in the difficult task of simultaneously safeguarding financial stability and inflation control.)
