Abstract

[eng] Towards general equilibrum models of urban land use . Masahisa Fujita. We discuss various approaches to developing general equilibrium models of urban land use in which the location of household and firms is determined simultaneously. The task of such models is to generate structured space from a void space. By considering the Spatial Impossibility Theorern by Starrett, we conclude that three prototypes of general equilibrium models are conceivable : Type A — the port city model, Type B —• the competitive equilibrium model with spatial externalities, and Type C — the noncompetitive equilibrium model. Then, we present a simple Type B model. It is shown that the model is capable of yelding multicentric equilibrium patterns as well as monocentric und dispersed patterns. Future research directions are also suggested.
