Le péri-urbain en Afrique : une agriculture en marge ?

Abstract

[fre] En Afrique, l'agriculture périurbaine constitue une source très importante de revenus et d'alimentation pour les citadins défavorisés. Or cette activité est soumise à de nombreuses contraintes, au premier rang desquelles la pression foncière. Les zones agricoles plus éloignées de la ville peuvent constituer une alternative à l'approvisionnement en vivres par le périurbain. Comme le montre le cas de l'approvisionnement de Brazzaville en légumes, les zones rurales et périurbaines sont en fait complémentaires : les légumes-feuilles et les légumes de type tempéré proviennent du périurbain, tandis que les légumes-fruits de type local proviennent des champs villageois. Les contraintes de terrain, mais également de transport, d'accès aux intrants et à l'appui technique sont déterminantes dans la localisation des productions. Enfin, l'analyse historique permet d'infirmer des hypothèses d'évolution linéaire de la production périurbaine vers le déclin ou l'expansion via l'intensification. It is subject to many constraints, the first one being pressure on land. Distant agricultural areas may be an alternative option relative to peri-urban areas supplying food to the cities. As shown by the vegetable chain supplying Brazzaville, rural and peri-urban areas are indeed complementary. Leaf-vegetables and temperate vegetables originate from peri-urban areas while local fruit-vegetables originate from village fields. Land constraints, but also transport, access to inputs and technical assistance are crucial to explain where production is located. Finally the historical analysis invalidates hypotheses of linear trends of peri-urban agriculture towards decline or development through intensification.
