Abstract

[eng] Household equipment or equipment in the household? - An initial examination of individual use of equipment within the family has been attempted. It has not revealed significant variations according to social environment. It came up against an initial difficulty: not all durable goods lend themselves to the same degree to the possibility of individual use. A combination of a priori ideas and empirical observations permits them to be classified on a scale "private goods" to "public goods". The significant role of children and, it would seem, the diminished role of the wife in relation to her husband, then, can be determined. But what constitutes the second difficulty is that the answers of participants in the survey to questions concerning the use of durable goods are ambiguous. Within the household, different types of use are possible. The notions of individual use and individual possession in part overlap. The representations of the family and internal power plays cloud the issue. The exploration of this mixture of significations has permitted the working-out of a questionnaire that should favor a better understanding of the phenomenon.
