Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Romanian Electricity Consumption

Abstract

In the paper we analysed the electricity consumption in Romania, during the period between March and December 2020. The SARIMAX econometric models are used in order to estimate the contrafactual for monthly electricity consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research findings show that the total domestic electricity consumption fell between March and August 2020 and registered a slow recovery by the end of the year. This dynamic is explained by a drastic drop in non-household electricity consumption, while the electricity consumption of household customers is systematically above the long-term trend.
