Abstract

This study investigates natural convection in a vertically oriented cylinder with a steam-heated pillow-plate jacket, relevant to renewable energy applications such as solar thermal energy storage. The heated region covers 70 % of the cylinder height, with adiabatic zones occupying 4 % at the bottom and 26 % at the top. An experimental tank (0.319 m³) filled with water, initially at 19 °C, was heated to 101 °C using a steam jacket. Temperature measurements were taken using an infrared camera for the non-insulated vessel, followed by internal sensors for the insulated vessel.
