Abstract

This is a continuation of our studies of the electrolyte problem formulated in the field-theoretic fashion. The discretization of the functional integral representing the partition function for asymmetric electrolytes allows us to study the strong coupling regime and to compare the final results with available Monte Carlo data. For space dimensionalities greater than two we found that our model exhibits a liquid-gas type phase transition. For symmetric 1-1 electrolytes in three dimensions the critical point is given in terms of the reduced variables, defined in the text as T∗r = 0.1263, P∗r = 0.0316, and 0.13 ⩽ π∗r ⩽ 0.25. For asymmetric electrolytes critical parameters are presented as some known functions of the symmetric critical parameters and the degree of ion charge asymmetry. The results obtained are in good agreement with the available Monte Carlo data.
