Reconstruction of cropland distribution in Northeast China from 1700 to 2020: A high-resolution gridded dataset and suitability-based allocation model

Abstract

Over the past 300 years, Northeast China has undergone extensive land cultivation activities by migrants. However, less information is available for historical gridded cropland in Northeast China. In this study, a 30-m spatially distributed cropland dataset from 1700 to 2020 was reconstructed by our established suitability coefficient model, derived from elevation, slope degree, slope aspect, mean annual precipitation, mean annual temperature, and the distances of land to rivers and settlements. For the first time, the historical girded cropland distribution in the black soil region was constructed by the allocation mode with an overall accuracy of 88% at the 30-m scale and a Kappa coefficient of 0.67. The underestimation of the simulated spatial cropland distribution, an example using the land use data in 1980, arose from the differences between the cropland inventory data and the remote sensed one. Overall, this study represents a significant step in reconstructing detailed cropland changes during the past 300 years, providing critical insights for global change modelling.
