Modeling the spatial dynamics of phage-driven perturbations in a bacterial cross-feeding system

Abstract

Cross-feeding, the exchange of metabolites among microbial populations, underpins the organization and stability of complex microbial communities. While ecological factors such as resource availability, spatial structure, and the presence of cheaters have been shown to influence cross-feeding interactions, the role of viral predation in shaping these interactions remains poorly understood. Bacteriophages can reduce the abundance of cross-feeding partners, alter metabolite fluxes, and restructure community interactions, yet most prior work has focused on well-mixed systems, leaving the effects of spatial heterogeneity unresolved.
