Family inclusion for children in care: How foster and kinship carers make it work

Abstract

This article reports how foster and kinship carers enabled children in out-of-home care to experience family inclusion, despite this not being a priority of the care system. We investigated the practice of family inclusion; through focus groups or interviews with 10 foster and 8 kinship carers in a convenience sample, from regional Australia. The article uses a definition of family inclusion that is based on children’s needs and experiences and draws on research that has found children benefit from family inclusion.
