Tourism boom, housing doom: Excessive tourism and international emigration

Abstract

•This note focuses on the nexus between excessive tourism growth and international emigration.•Uncontrolled and excessive tourism growth must be paired with adequate housing policies.•Forced economic emigration is one of the possible “long arms of short-term rentals”.•Excessive tourism can have possibly irreversible societal effects in the long term.
