The Multidimensional Concept of Well-Being in the Italian Regions: a Measurement Proposal

Abstract

This paper aims at developing the concept of well-being in its multidimensional form, taking into consideration not only the economic, but also the social and environmental aspects that characterize our society. Over the years, GDP per capita was used to determine the level of well-being. Recently, however, the limit of this measurement has become more and more evident, so alternative methods have been developed. Why then do we measure well-being? Why do we believe it is necessary to search for a measurement of well-being that goes beyond the mere economic-income related aspect? This paper provides an overview of the main topics related to these issues. In this context, a measure of well-being in the Italian Regions is proposed.
