Abstract

Seeking healthcare before, during, and after childbirth is essential not only for the health of the mother and child but also for its socioeconomic impact, particularly on household income. Access to adequate prenatal care helps prevent costly complications, especially during delivery. Furthermore, giving birth in a proper healthcare facility allows for effective management of complications. Maternal healthcare access remains a public health issue, and Madagascar is no exception. We decided to conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis of maternal healthcare access in the Toamasina I district with the goal of increasing women's access to prenatal and childbirth services by 6%. Data was collected from 403 mothers with at least one child up to five years old, spread across five districts, using attendance rates as effectiveness criteria. According to the results, 34.8% of women completed their fourth prenatal consultation (CPN4), and 25% of births occur in healthcare facilities within the district. An intervention in the form of a targeted subsidy covering 40% of direct medical care costs related to prenatal visits and childbirth is proposed.
