The Hamburg trade fairs and congresses account for 6,500 jobs throughout Germany

Abstract

The economic importance of trade fairs results is not only attributable to the commercial motivations of the enterprises as exhibitors and visitors. Trade fairs are also important for the economic regions of a trade-fail location since exhibitor, visitors and organisers demand services that lead to considerable production and employment effects in very different sectors of the economy. A study of the Ifo Institute on the economic importance of the Hamburg trade fairs and congresses for the region and Germany as a whole calculates the yearly sums spent by domestic and foreign visitors, exhibitors and congress event participants of the Hamburg Messe and Congress GmbH to be approximately €385 million, of which €334 million is spent in Germany. The total macroeconomic production effects are approximately €553 million, more than half of which is in Hamburg. During an average event year, 6,455 employees find work nationwide, of which 4,100 are in Hamburg. Here, 41% of the event-induced jobs are in the hotel and restaurant sector, 25% in the trades and 10% in retailing.
